Roadworks 2011: Interview with Nora Aoyagi

Here are a few words from Nora Aoyagi, a Roadworks 2011 featured artist…

“I originally got interested in printmaking in college, mainly working with woodcuts. I had always been really interested in art making, but printmaking was something new for me altogether. I really loved that it combined repetitive tasks, the capacity to make multiples of a favorite image, and just the right amount of room for fortunate mistakes.

I’m interested in telling stories. I like to make work that tells a story, that pulls you in. I always have a underlying narrative in my art, whether it’s a little joke, a reference to a well-known fairytale, or something very personal.

For me, art’s greatest capability is to convey meaning without words. I always find it very exciting to pull images out of my mind, put them down on paper, and show them to other people. It’s a fascinating and dynamic way to communicate, and to share ideas and inspirations. Art seems to me a form of communication too basic and effective to ever become irrelevant, despite rapid modernization.

I am inspired by many things! I feel lucky to live in a time and place where I have access to some many sources of inspiration, whether I’m visiting the local cartoon art museum, perusing the blogs of far away artists, or literally just hanging out in my own backyard.

My favorite thing about San Francisco is how everything feels at your fingertips.

[For my giant linoleum cut for Roadworks], predictably, I’m thinking about wolves! I’m excited!”
